Dare to Ask God Questions: He has Answers to Your Hard Questions – Part II

Let us proceed from where we left off last week. If you are asking God in order to know what to do, God will answer.

Zacharias’ Question
Luke 1:18
‘And Zacharias said unto the angel, whereby shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my Wife well stricken in years.’

I made mention in last week’s article that questions are not a sign of doubt. However, if your question implies that based on your particular circumstances the Word of God is incapable of being fulfilled, then your question is not probing to know what to do under your circumstances, but rather a conclusion that not even God’s Word can effect the necessary changes. Your question need not be a complaint.
That the priest Zacharias had an angel come with an answer to his prayer and yet still concluded that the answer could not materialize, based on his idiosyncratic situation, amounted to limiting the omnipotence and omniscience of God.
In verse 20 the angel said
‘And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.’

You express unbelief if what you say contradicts or is inconsistent with the Word of God. Zacharias’ question is essentially not different from the question the lord on whose hand the king leaned asked Elisha (2 Kings 7:2).

Mary’s Question
Luke 1:34
Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

Mary understood through her conversation with the angel that she was not going to get pregnant with a male sperm. And since what the angel was saying was novel she wanted to know how God was going to do this. She wanted the divine strategy. This is not different from me asking God how to multiply the current rulers I pastor till they become 120,000 rulers according to His promise to us. This is enquiring for the divine strategy. What must I know and do to deliver such output?
Verse 38 revealed the divine strategy. ‘And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.’ And hear Mary’s response in verse 38 after receiving the answer to her strategic question. ‘And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.’
Mary’s question of enquiry is similar to David’s question of enquiry in 1Chronicles 14:10
‘And David enquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? and wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thine hand.’
